U.S. to Slash Tariffs on Swiss Goods to 15% by December Amid Trade Pact
Switzerland's Economic Affairs Minister Guy Parmelin confirmed the United States will reduce tariffs on Swiss imports from 39% to 15% starting early December. The adjustment follows a preliminary agreement signed on 14 November, aimed at easing trade tensions between the two nations.
Swiss exporters, burdened by the 39% tariff—the highest imposed on any European country in August—will see relief once the new rate takes effect. Implementation requires 10-12 working days after U.S. system updates, though Parmelin declined to specify an exact date, citing ongoing preparations.
The deal includes a Swiss commitment to invest $200 billion in U.S. chemical, machinery, and high-tech sectors by 2028. Parmelin emphasized further negotiations to ensure the reduction is fully enacted, hinting at potential additional Swiss tariff waivers beyond the 15% benchmark.
